Never have I imagined that there are police patrolling around one of Canada’s largest cities – Quebec, trying to protect the French language.
Today while reading the newspaper I came across an article that explained how Quebec language police have asked restaurants owners to translate words like ‘pasta’ and ‘steak’ into French.
My judgement on this was – ‘they’ve go to be kidding’. During the American revolution the Battle of Quebec was a move to set the city free from British control but I didn’t realise that it still exists today.
Don’t get me wrong, I agree that every country should promote their own culture and stick to their own rules but don’t overdo it.
Having said that, I want to outline the language laws of Bill 101 (or shall I say Loi 101):
- Workers must carry out their activities in French
- Consumers must be served and informed in French
- Business must be done in French
- Instructions must be received in French
